Miramichi Airport (YCH) is a certified airport, operated by Miramichi Airport Commission, a not-for-profit organization. The Commission was created in 1974 to ensure that a commercial air service would be attracted to the area and to manage the air terminal.

The mandate is to support all forms of aviation services in the safest and most efficient manner; and to serve as a catalyst for social and economic development, for the citizens and businesses of the entire Miramichi region.

Miramichi Airport Commission has operated the Airport since 1990, when     the Department of National Defence changed the operating role of CFB Chatham from air to ground support (CFB Chatham closed in 1996 and is operated as Sky Park Miramichi, a business park). The Airport supports General Aviation activity and is the home base of the Department of Natural Resources Air Tanker Operations and Forest Protection Limited, who own and operate the air tanker fleet. The Airport operator provides basic ground service support including jet fuel, av gas, ground power, de-icing and UNICOM operations. The published approach is an NDB/DME with a GPS overlay. The runway, 09-27, is 5899 feet x 150 feet wide and is maintained year-round. It has a recent pavement overlay (1998), new approach lights and a new taxiway.

The airport revenues are generated from the existing tenants and various private, corporate and recreational aircraft using the airport.  A highlight of a recent Economic Impact and Sustainability Study (June 1996) conducted by the University of New Brunswick, Transportation Group, is that Miramichi Airport makes a significant impact on the economy and surrounding areas of approximately $3.3 million.

The Airport is within the City limits of New Brunswick’s fourth largest City, and has a population draw of 55,000 within a 50km radius of the Airport. It is centrally located on the intersections of major Provincial highway routes and near the seaport of Miramichi. The Miramichi region supports a diverse economy, which includes knowledge-based industries, value-added products in the forestry and mining sectors, and tourism activities.

We currently have land available with airside access and land available for groundside activity. This land can be developed to the tenant’s requirements. In addition, a J85 engine test facility is located on the Airport.
