Anointing

Anointing

1 Sam 16:13

13      Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. (KJV)

I want to look tonight at something that as a church we desperately need to understand.

I want to look at the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

It was a great moment in Jesse’s house that day as the family gathered around to see what the old prophet was going to do.

They seen something that to the natural eye was not that big a deal but something happened that day that there eyes could not see that was the biggest thing that happened in king David’s life.

The physical act that happened in Bethelem that day was very significant in the eyes of those who witnessed it.

Because when the prophet Samuel who himself was anointed of God poured the horn of oil over this young man everyone in the room knew that what he was doing was passing the sovereign rule of God to a delegated authority on earth.

You remember the discussion that God had with Samuel when they first wanted a king.

1 Sam 8:7

7         And the LORD told him: "Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. (NIV)

The pouring of the oil on the head of a man gave him the right to act on behalf of God.

We would refer to it as power of attorney.

That is why Kings and the anointed became synonymous.

Not only was it legal authority but it was a transference of actual power in a limited way.

From that day on when David would play his harp he would project a spirit that would change the attitude of those who would hear.

1 Sam 16:23

23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. (KJV)

From that day on when ever a giant showed up David had a power in his life that felt like taking him on.

1 Sam 17:32    David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him." (NIV)

This is why he would write things like

Ps 18:29

29 For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

(KJV)

Ps 118:10

10   All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them.

(KJV)

In the best loved of all the psalms he writes

Ps 23:5

thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

(KJV)

Ps 92:10

10     But Thou hast exalted my horn like {that of} the wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil. (NAS)

This anointing is a power from God that takes the work out of ministry.

When everyone else is struggling at their job you have a power in your life that makes insurmountable obstacles exciting challenges.

Isa 10:27

27 It shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil. (NKJ)

When you bring this anointing with you it will cause people in the same office with you that are all stressed out to smile and be merry instead of being frustrated and anxious.

This power will rise up in you in the midst of challenges and give you a winning attitude.

You will feel peace when everyone else wants to give up.

As you read of David you find when he played for Saul that his spirit instantly changed. And David taught others to do the same.

1 Chr 25:1

1     Moreover, David and the commanders of the army set apart for the service {some} of the sons of Asaph and of Heman and of Jeduthun, who {were} to prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals; and the number of those who performed their service was: (NAS)

3  Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the direction of their father Jeduthun with the harp, who prophesied in giving thanks and praising the LORD. (NAS)

7        And their number who were trained in singing to the LORD, with their relatives, all who were skillful, {was} 288. (NAS)

Listen to what the bible has to say about us.

1 Pet 2:9

9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; (NKJ)

Look at how revelations begins

Rev 1:5-6

… Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

6       And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. (KJV)

But let me talk to you about this whole story.

1 Sam 16:14

14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. (KJV)

The same day that the Holy Spirit came upon David the anointing left Saul.

I do not believe that the Spirit of God ever leaves a man in today’s world. I believe that

John 14:16

16    And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (KJV)

But as sure as my name is John when I walk in my own way and do my own will I do not walk in the anointing.

I am not anointed to do my own thing. I am anointed to do the will of God.

I believe that the calling of God on my life remains constant and cannot be changed. But the power I need to fulfill that calling is constantly changing.

As I burn the oil in my light it constantly needs replenishing.

Its only as I wait upon the lord that I can renew my strength.

And I believe that half the time we are trying to do with our own strength what can only be done with God’s.

You can fill a church with people with good music good preaching and good programs. But you cannot build the kingdom of God without the power of the Holy Spirit. It takes more than good preaching to deliver a man from drugs. It takes more than good preaching to empower people to work with children or youth or be excited about worship week after week.

Our church is probably the healthiest it has ever been right now but we desperately need the anointing if we are to continue this pase for long.

Isa 40:30-31

30      Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (KJV)

Not only does the anointing give you strength to keep going but it makes serving God exciting. It puts an inner joy into doing it that is beyond description.

John 15:11

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

(KJV)

Some of you have no idea how good that can be.
