Hope Deferred
IKing 19:1 1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
(KJV) Be careful who you Share your stories about life with. Matt 7:6 6 Give not that which is holy unto the
dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.(KJV)
There may well have been some hope for Ahab if it wasn't for who he took his advice from. David writes Blessed is
the man who walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly. And the bible says of Solomon that IKing 11:3-4 3 He
had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines; and sure enough, they turned his heart away from the Lord, 4 especially
in his old age. They encouraged him to worship their gods instead of trusting completely in the Lord as his father David had
done.(TLB) II IKing 19:2 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and
more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.(KJV) The devil always has
a plan to try to hurt you. But listen to this Prov 3:21-24 21 Have two goals: wisdom-- that is, knowing and doing
right-- and common sense. Don't let them slip away, 22 for they fill you with living energy and bring you honor and respect.
23 They keep you safe from defeat and disaster and from stumbling off the trail. 24 With them on guard you can sleep
without fear; you need not be afraid of disaster or the plots of wicked men, for the Lord is with you; he protects you.(TLB)
Prov 3:25-26 25 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, 26 for the LORD
will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared. (NIV) Wouldn't it have been nice if Elijah would
have read the words of David right here . Ps 121:1-8 1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh
my help. 2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. 3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:
he that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD
is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. 8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out
and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. (KJV) But instead of reading a psalm he listened to the
words of the enemy. Like peter walking on the water he took his eyes off of the master and began to see the waves and
the storm. Natural common sense took over. Paul writes 2 Cor 5:7 (We walk by faith, not by sight:) (KJV) But
I believe that there is a big reason for this. And of all the things that we have to contend with in life this is he
worst. The failure of our plans. When things do not go the way we expected they would. So many times in life we
are having a problem and we begin to work our way out of it. We have this bill and we find a way of paying it of or so we
think. We have this pain and we find what we think is a cure. We have this habit and we think that we have it beaten.
We have this problem in our homes and we think that we have talked it through and found the answer and we can see a light
at the end of the tunnel. Promises are made and we believe them in good faith. And then things go wrong. Something
else breaks and it ended up costing us twice as much. Just when the pain seemed to have subsided the doctor in fact told
us it is much worse than he had expected. We thought we could get around the problem a little and the habit came back
worse than ever. And our spouse broke the promise and went away worse than he or she had ever done in their life and
told us it was our fault. Solomon wrote about this in proverbs. Prov 13:12 12 Hope deferred makes the heart
sick; (TLB) Look at Jonah Jonah 4:7-8 7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it
smote the gourd that it withered. 8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind;
and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die
than to live.(KJV) Job Wrote Job 10:18-19 18 "'Why then did you even let me be born? Why didn't you let
me die at birth? 19 Then I would have been spared this miserable existence. I would have gone directly from the womb
to the grave.(TLB) Watch Elijah's response IKing 19:3-4 3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his
life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day's journey
into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said,
It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.(KJV) He does all the wrong things.
1. He reacts to the threat of the devil. 2. He runs for his life. 3. He gets all alone. 4. He stops eating
properly and sleeping properly. 5. Instead of listening to God he tries to tell God how it should be done. IKing
19:5-8 5 Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and
eat." 6 He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He
ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, "Get
up and eat, for the journey is too much for you." 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he
traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.(NIV) Sometime I would like to preach
a sermon on Elijah's cooks. The ravins the widow and the angel. God is so practical. Sometimes we just need
a big feed. Sometimes we just need a little shut eye. Sometimes we just need some one to care about some very basic
stuff. Were not all that complicated. There's nothing wrong with a day off. I hear Jesus saying to his disciples
come apart and rest awhile. I hear him saying to the multitudes. Sit down on the grass. David said he maketh
me to lie down in green pastures. And I hear him saying to me Come unto me all ye that are weary and heavy laden and
I will give you rest. I find it takes as much faith to rest as it does to work. Sometimes God wants to refocus us.
He wants us to stop and smell the roses. He wants us to know that he is in charge no matter what Jezabel has said.
