Bartholomew Island is famous for Pinnacle Rock, a towering rock that rises from the oceans's edge & is the best known
landmark in the islands. This island is the youngest island at 350,000 years old .
Galapagos penguins - the only species of penguin found north of the equator - walk along the narrow volcanic ledges at
it's base. Galapagos penguins grow between 18-20 inches tall . They have a black head with a white border.
The highlight of my trip happened here. I went snorkeling at Pinnacle Rock & found a small cave. I went into the
cave & saw a penguin sitting on a ledge about 20 feet in. I swam up to him & he didn't move. The ledge was about 4
feet long & only about one foot above the water. I slid up on the ledge & sat approx. two feet from him. I could touch
him but I didn't. We sat & stared at each other for about 10 minutes & I finally slid off the ledge & continued
on. Later I found him outside the cave & took his picture.
