Yvon Durelle

"The Fighting Fisherman"

Born on October 14th, 1929, Yvon Durelle boasts nearly 50 knockouts during his boxing career.  Having won such titles as Canadian Light-Heavyweight and the British Empire Light-Heavyweight, Yvon is easily remembered as one of the country's greatest boxing legends.

Yvon, the "Fighting Fisherman", one of the world's most courageous and colourful athletes, began boxing in 1947.  In a 12 round decision over Gordon Wallace, he won the Light-Heavyweight title of Canada in 1953.  He beat Wallace again in 1957 to take the British Empire Light-Heavyweight crown.

Durelle came within a feather in 1958 of capturing the World Light-Heavyweight title in a spectacular battle with Archie Moore losing on a KO in eleven rounds.  It was dubbed the boxing match of the decade and later the boxing match of the half century!
