TABUSINTAC ANNUAL SURF AND TURF RELAY RACE
GENERAL OVERVIEW
1. The Tabusintac 1st Annual Surf and Turf Relay Race will be held on the 22nd August 2009 to coincide with the 4th
World Acadian Congress, an event that is expected to draw thousands of visitors to northeastern New Brunswick. In subsequent
years the event will be held every summer on a date to be determined by the Race Committee. The purpose of the event is to:
a) raise awareness of Tabusintac's tourism potential, b) to promote a healthy lifestyle through physical activity, c)
to foster community spirit, d) to raise funds for the TCDCI (Tabusintac Community Development Corp Inc) for use in community
development, and e) most of all to have fun.
2. For the first year the race will have two
divisions "open" and "family". The open race involves a six person 26km relay race around the Tabusintac
River. Each team consists of 2 canoeists, 2 runners, 1 swimmer and 1 cyclist. The family division involves a 5 person 10 km
relay race consisting of 2 canoeists, 1 cyclist, 1 runner, and 1 swimmer. The family team must be made up of at least 1 female
plus 2 children under the age of 18 as of race day. Each team member in the family division must be related to the other team
members. Each team is responsible for supplying canoes, bikes, and life jackets for their own team (there may be a limited
number of these items available from the race committee).
Start time for the family division is 12 noon and for the open
division start time is 1pm
3. For 2009 each division will be limited to a maximum of 30
teams. If it is considered feasible, based on the results of year one, the number of teams and categories for future events
may be increased. For instance, categories could be added for seniors, women only, juniors, and corporations. For year one
the entry fee will be $150.00 per team for the open division and $100.00 per team for the family division.
4. The race will end at the Tabusintac Recreation Field to allow a gathering point for spectators and athletes
to see the completion of the race and to present prizes. Following the race a BBQ will be held for athletes and volunteers.
Spectators may also attend the BBQ but will pay for their own food. For your information there is an outdoor dance being held
at River Haven Campground in the evening of 21 and 22 August 2009. These dances are being held in conjunction with the World
Acadian Congress and are separate events from the race but everyone is welcome to attend. The cost of the dance is $10 per
person and it is recommended you book your tickets in advance. More information is available on the website www.tabusintac.ca.
