Tai Chi World Tai Chi & Qi Gong Day

Tai Chi stretches and tones the body in a cumulative
way that is so gentle as to be perhaps the lowest impact exercise there is, and yet surprisingly burns nearly as many calories
as downhill skiing. This 2000 year old prescription for your future health is finally beginning to get
the attention it deserves with a 'Certificate of Acknowledgment' from the W.H.O. Evidence indicates that Tai
Chi may boost the immune system, slow the aging process and reduce the incidence of anxiety, depression, fatigue, and general
mood disturbances.
If that's not enough,
reports suggest these exercises also minimize the effects of chronic conditions such as allergies and asthma, improve breathing
capacity, and at the same time improve postural control, which in some cases may elevate chronic lower back pain. World Tai Chi Day is held on the last Saturday of April at 10 am right around the world each year and that includes us here on the Mighty Miramichi.
Qi Gong
Qi Gong,
(pronounced Chee - Gong) is a powerful self-healing system that originated in China at least 5000 years ago. It was developed
within the vast realm of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and now enjoys a place in the top four major groups of T.C.M. It is
responsible for a multitude of health benefits as evidenced by long-term clinical and experimental studies
Most
often characterized by a series of flowing movements, Qi Gong is much more than what appears to be a gentle form of exercise.
The practice of Qi Gong strengthens the body, calms the mind & elevates the spirit.
The Chinese
word 'Qi' means vital bio-energy, and it is the key to our energetic health. The word 'Gong' means manipulation or work with
intention. Thus the practice of Qi Gong can be understood as 'energy work'.
One might ask 'Why would we want to work with energy or
Qi.. ? . The answer is the simple, 'Because our total health and well-being depends upon the strong, smooth flow of Qi within
our bodies'.
Aikido
The Gentle Art of Self-Defense
The youngest
of all the martial Arts, Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba, usually referred to by his title 'O
Sensei’. On a purely physical level it is an art involving throws and joint locks derived from jiu-jitsu, and kenjutsu.
Aikido focuses
not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using there own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from
you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of circular movement.
There are
many styles of Aikido; here 'on the river' we practice the Aikikai style. This is 'classical' Aikido as taught by the Ueshiba
family. Today it is governed by the Aikikai Foundation, which is run by O Sensie's son, Doshu - Kisshomaru Ueshiba.
